Beans & Barley (Cafe/Restaurant)

Beans & Barley

A place that is both a Restaurant and a Grocery Store / Catering in Milwaukee (WI); not dedicated only to Vegetarian or Vegan Cuisine but that offers quite a lot of choice.

If you are Vegan it can be limited, but if you are Vegetarian the choice quite acceptable, hot meals as well as salads. Please note that the staff is always ready to listen to your requests, and they do not hesitate to check if such or such thing is Vegan or not; as well as you can ask for such meal without cheese for example. On the Sweet side, some things are Vegan (the Green signs), and even Vegan & Gluten-Free.

Prices are really reasonnable, Cookies are $1, Muffins $1,60. Drinks are at a normal price, and concerning the Salads, Burgers & other Sandwiches prices go from $6 to about $9.

Nothing wrong to tell about it, except maybe the lack of room in the restaurant. Anyway, this is a good address in Milwaukee to keep in mind, if you have a bit (or totally) the munchies.

  • Oh my! I’m from Milwaukee!!! I’m so happy that you reviewed Beans and Barley! Did you try the Out – Post? They had the best desserts… its been four years since I’ve been to Wisconsin (now in Arizona), so the Out-Post might have changed their menus and food options.

  • Löu:

    Awesome !
Unfortunately I went only one in Milwaukee and tried only this Beans & Barly. Next time I am coming (and I have no idea when it will be), I will try it ! I am a dessert lover, and reading that they are making wonderful desserts at this place makes me want to take a plane.
I did not try to find any addresses in Arizona as I was sure I would not have the oppotunity to go there, so I have no idea if there are a lot of places where you can eat vegan. Is it easy to be vegan in this state ?

  • I’ve been vegan for about two years. I was always a vegetarian, so going full fledged vegan was very easy for me. :) If you do come to Arizona, you HAVE to eat at Green. http://greenvegetarian.com/menu
Green is by far the best vegan place I’ve eaten at here. There is also a great vegetarian / vegan place pretty close to where I live, http://freshmint.us.com/aboutus.html
I think it is pretty easy being a vegan in the States. There are a bunch of places to buy food – Whole Foods and Trader Joes are all over the place. I’m able to get my personal care items at Whole Foods, like body lotions, shampoos, and body washes that are vegan. Also Dillards and Macy’s sells Origins make up, which is a great vegan alternative for make up. :)
I’ve also gotten my parents vegan. :) If you ever do come to Arizona, you need to eat at Green! Its so amazing!!!

  • Löu:

Oh boy, I just checked out Green’s menu. That’s wonderful ! Even though we have a couple of vegan restaurants in France, and some vegetarians too. It is far from being the same as in the US. I remember how I always had problem to pick one item in the list, because I was tempted to try everything !
I will remember to go there if I stop by Phoenix or Tempe.

You are so lucky to have such a family. I am not even considering to convince my parents to go vegan or even vegetarian but when I read that some people, like you, grew up vegetarian, it makes me wonder.

  • Yes, thats the problem we have at Green, we want to try everything. It is such a delicious place. If you are in Tempe / Phoenix, you’ll have to eat there. I was in Paris for a week before I was a vegan and I had such a good time eating there. They were very accommodating to my diet, which was great! I don’t speak any French, so communicating was very difficult. I wish I could go back there… its such a beautiful city.
If you think your parents might benefit from reading some books on the harmful effects of eating animals, try giving them Skinny Bitch. It helped convince my mom. :)

  • Löu:

Oh then I see that I am not the only one with this kind of dilemma. Phew !
If you come back to Paris you may want to try Loving Hut and Le Potager Des Marais, and even if many people seem to have some negative things to write about the latter, two friends of mine did go there and were amazed and delighted. I have not been there yet, but will try to.
I am glad to read that you had a great time in Paris even more so if you did not speak French, as sometimes French people are saif to be cold or arogant. And now I am also daring to ask for special items when I go to a restaurant that does not offer a single vegetarian (if not vegan) meal.
I wrote the name of the book you advise me to give to my family. Thanks ;)
